SEMH Teaching Assistant

Location: Leicester (LE12)

Contract: Long-term to permanent

Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am- 3:30pm

Start Date: 28th April onwards

Desirable background:

Experience supporting young people with SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) needs. A background in coaching, sports leadership, or youth engagement is advantageous but not required.

Long Term Futures is recruiting a SEMH Teaching Assistant to work within a specialist education setting that caters to students aged 4-16 with social, emotional, and mental health needs. This position is ideal for individuals with a background in special educational needs (SEN), behaviour mentoring, or youth work. Those with skills in sports, physical education, or coaching can also use their expertise to help engage students in a positive way.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide dedicated 1:1 and small group support for students with SEMH needs, ensuring they remain engaged in their learning.
• Assist students in regulating their emotions and behaviours through structured interventions and targeted support strategies.
• Foster resilience and confidence by incorporating physical activity, teamwork, and structured behaviour support.
• Create an inclusive, supportive learning environment that prioritizes students' mental health and well-being.
• Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and support staff to provide a holistic approach to SEMH education.
• Implement effective behaviour management strategies tailored to the needs of individual students.

Who We're Looking For:

• Previous experience in an SEMH school, SEN classroom, PRU, or alternative provision is highly desirable.
• A background in youth work, education, or mentoring, particularly with young people who experience challenging behaviours.
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills to support SEMH students effectively.
• A patient, proactive, and resilient approach to working in an SEN and SEMH environment.
• A background in sports, physical education, or coaching is a plus but not required.
